(18 February 2002 – 21:21) A terrorist opened fire at a convoy of Israeli vehicles traveling between the Kissufim Crossing and the Gush Katif communities in Gaza at about 7:00pm Monday evening. The terrorist fired at the vehicles and threw hand grenades or bombs. Two persons were killed and several wounded. One of the critically wounded victims was pronounced dead in the trauma unit of the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba a short time following his arrival.
Immediately after it became clear that some of the victims were seriously wounded, a helicopter was summoned to expedite transport of the victims to the trauma center.
The terrorist detonated a bomb when the army arrived on the scene, killing himself.
Emergency medical service officials report a female occupant of the vehicle targeted by the terrorist was killed. Local officials report she was a resident of one of the Gush Katif communities. They also report the other two fatalities were security forces.
Soroka officials report three victims of the attack are being treated with one listed in serious condition and two moderate.
Bomb squad technicians were called in to detonate explosives on the dead terrorist.
Elsewhere in Gaza, army forces spotted two terrorists attempting to infiltrate into Morag, in the southern area. They opened fire killing one and wounding the second who fled the scene. There were no injuries to our forces in that incident.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon tonight is meeting with the senior commanders of various security agencies, seeking a direction towards bringing an end to the latest wave of fatal PA terror attacks.
