Two suicide terrorists were killed late this afternoon just moments before they were to detonate their explosives-laden packs outside a large army base near Pardes Chana, just east of Hadera. They arrived at the gate of the Machaneh Shmonim compound, where one of them got out and began shooting. Policemen returned fire, killed the shooter, and gave chase after the second terrorist who was speeding away in the car. Minutes later, the car blew up, apparently from the explosives pack the driver was wearing on his person. Police sappers spent at least an hour after the attack to neutralize the explosives pack on the body of the first terrorist. Five Israelis are reported wounded, including one policeman in serious condition.
The firing of Kassam rockets, which Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and other officials warned would be greeted with a severe Israeli response, appears to have become a matter of course. Palestinian terrorists fired a Kassam-1 last night at an IDF command post in northern Gaza\'s Nisanit, while the much more far-reaching and powerful Kassam-2 was fired towards Kibbutz Kfar Aza, well within pre-1967 Israel. No one was hurt.
The murderous attack last night in Karnei Shomron (see below) was the first of its type in a shopping center in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. However, the terrorists did not rest on their laurels, and shortly afterwards attempted another attack against Givat Har\'el, just between Shilo and Ma\'aleh Levonah, some 40 kilometers north of Jerusalem. The terrorist cell shot automatic fire at the homes from a hilltop overlooking the neighborhood, and escaped by car. Miraculously, no one was hurt.
