As Israeli Jews have been descending on the south with donations, food, clothing, and everything else they can fit in the trunks of their cars, Jews in the diaspora have been marshaling resources to help the IDF and Israelis cope with Operation Protective Edge. On Sunday, the Jewish National Fund said it had raised $4 million in just the past several days from Jews and supporters of Israel in North America.

Among other things, the money will be used to buy 160 mini-shelters, to be placed in Israeli towns in the south. The shelters will allow residents to move about town and remain prepared for a rocket attack; they will be placed close enough together so that an individuals walking down the street will be able to get to the shelter within just a few moments.

The money will also be used to buy equipment for Ichud Hatzalah and Magen David Adom rescue crews, the JNF said.

Emergency fundraising will continue in the coming days, the JNF added, saying the organization expects to be able raise significant sums in the coming days as well.
