An extremely powerful blast directed at a Merkavah-3 tank resulted in the killing of three soldiers, and a fourth was wounded. Two of the dead are Sgt. Moshe Peled, 20, from Rehovot, and Sgt. Asher Zaguri, 20, from Shlomi.
At about 9:00pm, terrorists detonating what was described as an extremely powerful armor-piercing bomb targeted a tank responding to a shooting attack in the area of Netzarim, in northern Gaza. The blast split the tank open.
The wounded soldiers received initial treatment from army medical personnel, including physicians. They were then transported to the trauma unit of the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba according to military sources.
The tank was responding to the area after a passenger bus traveling from Netzarim to Karnei was targeted by automatic gunfire earlier. There were no injuries in that attack.
Preliminary evidence pointed to an extremely well planned attack, indicating yet another escalation in PA terrorism, the use of the powerful armor-piercing explosive device.
According to information received by Reuters, the “Salah a-Din Brigade” claimed responsibility for the attack, adding two bombs were detonated followed by gunfire directed at the tank. The organization is reportedly a branch of Fatah. Other news agency reports indicate both Fatah and Hamas are responsible for the attack, adding it was in retaliation for the killing of five PA security troops this week in Gaza by IDF forces.
