Yisrael Beytenu will support a major push to postpone the presidential elections, Chairman Avigdor Liberman announced Monday - but only if Israel switches to a presidential-based system of government.

Much talk has been volleyed around the Knesset over the past few weeks over the presidential elections, as controversy reigns around the candidates as well as the role of President itself.

Several politicians have stated that the post is a "joke" and that a cancellation is in order; others have called to postpone the elections for various reasons.

However, no major minister has yet suggested that the entire system of government be changed as a result of the elections - a proposal which elicited surprise and shock from several MKs.

"Liberman's proposal to change the game stinks of a Putin-style presidential system," Meretz Chairman Zahava Gal-On responded Monday night. "Instead of replacing the governmental system, we should replace the governors themselves and block the legislation of a Bill of Rights," she sarcastically added.

Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) is due to announce the official date of presidential elections next week.
