The number of Israelis killed in terrorist attacks in the past 48 hours climbed to four early this afternoon when two Palestinians began shooting randomly at soldiers and others passers-by near an IDF base in the Negev city of Be\'er Sheva. An army officer quickly shot and killed one of the terrorists; the other then ran away and was pursued, shot, and killed by police officers.
The tragedy could have been many times greater had one of the terrorists managed to detonate the explosives pack he was later found to be wearing on his person. Two women were killed, and four people were seriously wounded - one critically - and several others were lightly wounded. The army closed off the main Gaza Strip highway in two places, at the Netzarim and Gush Katif junctions, preventing north-south Arab traffic.
Two women were killed in two other terrorist attacks on Friday and last night. Atla Lipovsky, 79, of the Jordan Valley \"capital\" Maaleh Efraim, was shot to death last night by terrorists waiting in ambush slightly west of the Tapuach Junction in the Shomron. Her son Victor, 48, who was driving, was lightly hurt. Atla Lipovsky was buried in Kfar Sava this afternoon.
On Friday afternoon, Moran Amit, 25, a Haifa University law student, was stabbed to death in the Peace Forest in Abu Tor, Jerusalem. The four Arab youths responsible for the death were caught and arrested - one of them died of heart failure in the course of the chase - but not before stabbing and lightly wounding yet another woman in the vicinity. They later admitted having perpetrated other stabbings and attacks in the Jerusalem area over the past weeks, including placing a bomb in a Talpiot building.
Yet another suicide terrorist was caught early this evening just north of Tul Karem in western Shomron with a sizeable amount of explosives on him.
Upon landing in Israel this afternoon, Prime Minister Sharon again blamed Arafat, saying, \"Jewish women were murdered as a result of terrorism for which Arafat is directly responsible.\" Taken together with Sharon\'s declared search for a successor for Arafat, this statement seemed to imply that Abu Ala, Abu Mazen, and Mohammed Rashid, with whom Sharon met ten days ago, do not share responsibility for the murderous terrorism.
