Brig.-Gen. (res.) Effie Eitam has been offered the post of chief of Counter-Terrorism Staff by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. This was reported by HaTzofeh on Friday, and the story was picked up by other major papers today. Eitam retired from the army over a year ago after what should have been a natural promotion to Maj.-Gen. was apparently blocked by the kippah on his head. Eitam has been flirting with entering politics either in the Likud or an NRP-style party for some time. Last month, former Mossad chief Danny Yatom was disqualified from heading Sharon\'s Counter-Terrorism team by the Supreme Court due to his involvement in the 1984 Bus #300 incident. Eitam acknowledged meeting with Mr. Sharon last week, but would say no more.
