Efforts continue on all fronts to fight the war against traffic accidents. Israel Police has begun a new month-long campaign to enforce seat-belt laws. Three passengers killed in separate accidents in the course of January were found not to have been strapped in. In the first week of the program, the police wrote 3,078 tickets to drivers and passengers who were not wearing seat belts. In one case, a policeman signaled two unstrapped brothers - Arabs from Ramallah - to pull over, but they attempted a violent getaway and ended up overturning the car. The police soon found out why: the two had stolen the car a short time before in Tel Aviv.
