Maj.-Gen. Yitzchak Eitan, IDF Central District Commander, announced that in light of the grave consequences of this past Wednesday\'s terrorist attack in Hamra - one soldier and a mother and daughter were murdered - the measures for safeguarding Yesha communities would be re-evaluated. Never before since the beginning of the current Oslo War in Sept. 2000 have Palestinian terrorists carried out a fatal attack within a Jewish community in Judea and Samaria, although several people have been killed in such attacks in northern Gaza.

An investigation of the events at Hamra showed that most of the reserve duty soldiers assigned to protect the town are not sufficiently trained for combat situations. Some of the soldiers assigned to similar duty have admitted that they would not know what to do in case of a terrorist infiltration. Nevertheless, the reserve units are assigned to these locations because of manpower limitations elsewhere in the army. It was disclosed that at one point during the Hamra attack, as many as 7-8 soldiers were firing at the terrorist, but failed to do more than wound him in his leg before he entered the Ohanas\' home and killed Miri and Yael.
