The Jewish community of Hevron claims that the Israeli police there continue to harass the city’s Jewish residents. According to a comprehensive report prepared by the Hevron Community Press Office, plain-clothed detectives have been stationed for a number of weeks at various locations in nearby Kiryat Arba and to monitor movement of some local residents. Last week, detectives forcibly opened the door of a car driven by a woman, demanded to know who was in the car, and inspected their ID cards.
Yesterday, undercover police stopped the car of Hevron resident Anat Cohen, who is expecting her 11th child, and presented her with an arrest warrant. When Cohen refused to unlock the doors, one of the police officers told her, \"You have, as a favor, one minute to get out of the car or I\'ll break the window and pull you out by force.\"
Following the threat, the pregnant mother felt ill and was transported by ambulance for tests at the Kiryat Arba medical center. Over 10 police and detectives escorted her including a policewoman who insisted on riding in the ambulance. Following a thorough check-up, the doctors determined that Anat Cohen needed full bed rest, and they refused to allow the police to interrogate her. The police finally let her go.
The report also states that several months ago, police apprehended Mrs. Cohen at a demonstration in Kiryat Arba and dropped her from a height of almost two yards onto her back.
