Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has confirmed the decision not to appeal against last month's acquittal of Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman on fraud charges, the justice ministry said Wednesday.

"Following the verdict, the attorney general was required to address the question of whether to file an appeal on behalf of the state, and, to that end, he heard opinions and held a number of discussions," the ministry said.

"After consideration, the attorney general decided to adopt the positions of the outgoing and incoming state attorneys, who advised him not to appeal against the judgement."

Liberman quit his position in December 2012 after being formally charged with fraud and breach of trust for appointing as ambassador to Latvia Ze'ev Ben Aryeh, a diplomat who had tipped him off about a police probe into his affairs.

According to Walla!, the Justice Ministry also noted that despite Weinstein's decision against the move, the attorney general still upholds that the charges brought against the Foreign Minister were legitimate and deserved to be brought to trial in the first place..

"The Attorney General emphasizes that it is not his decision to approve the actions of Mr. Liberman, and that even the court who acquitted him found his actions to be inappropriate, immoral, and not to the standards of a public figure - especially not a senior member of the government of the State of Israel," the ministry stated.

The Foreign Minister and Yisrael-Beytenu party chairman was reinstated by the Knesset last month.

Liberman's reappointment has been controversial; several MKs from the Opposition expressed shock at the acquittal and called for an appeal.
