Preparations were underway across the country Tuesday for the winter storm that is expected to arrive Wednesday. The storm may continue over the weekend, with snow expected in Jerusalem and the Golan.

Snow may fall in hilly regions in central Israel as well, particularly between Thursday and Saturday as temperatures drop.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat surveyed preparations and met with snowplow crews. “The city of Jerusalem is wrapping up its preparations for snow,” he said.

“Snow is something to celebrate in Jerusalem, both for Jerusalemites and for the many people who visit to see the world’s most beautiful city painted white,” he continued. “We hope the snow won’t disappoint.”

Children in particular are eagerly awaiting snow, he added.

The Transportation Ministry has decided to open a situation room dedicated to following weather updates and their impact on transportation during the storm. The storm could lead to road closures and to changes to public transportation, ports or airports.

Arkia Airlines has already decided to change its flights due to the expected stormy weather. All flights within Israel that were scheduled to depart or land at Sde Dov airport on Wednesday will be moved to Ben Gurion International Airport, airline workers said.
