Knesset Interior Committee chairperson MK Miri Regev (Likud) on Sunday slammed Arab MK Ahmed Tibi, calling him a “trojan horse” who was working to destroy Israel from the inside.

Regev made the comments in the wake of a video publicized by Arutz Sheva, in which Tibi is seen saying that Jews should be prevented from visiting the Temple Mount, because they would “contaminate” it.

“The Al-Aqsa mosque is a place of prayer for Muslims alone. Period! Not for others,” Tibi declared. the occupation of Al-Aqsa by the Crusaders was long, but it ended, the same was true of the British Mandate, and the same will be true of the Israeli occupation of Al-Quds [Jerusalem] and Al-Aqsa,” he said.

The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism, the place where the two Holy Temples stood before being destroyed in turn by the Babylonians and Romans. Despite court rulings that allow Jews to pray at the site, police generally do not allow them to do so, citing public safety concerns.

Tibi was railing against a move by police to allow Jewish worshippers on the Mount during the Sukkot holiday. The decision to let Jews visit during Sukkot is part of a gradual plan with the ultimate goal of sharing the holy site equally between Muslims and Jews, Tibi warned, adding that Muslims must not accept such an arrangement.

Commenting on Tibi's declarations, Regev said that Tibi was “a trojan horse in Israel's Knesset. It is untenable that an MK would speak in such a manner, against the values of the state. Every Israeli, regardless of his religion, has the right to pray on the Temple Mount. Israel allows the right to every citizen to worship the way they wish, and that includes Jews who wish to pray on the Temple Mount, without injuring the religious sentiments of Muslims. Jews have a 3,000 year old historical right to the Land of Israel,” she said.

“Tibi's comments are traitorous, and such comments should be banned,” Regev added. “It is truly sad that an Arab MK would incite against the state in such a manner.”
