HonestReporting.com reports on what it considers this past week\'s worst offenses in news-distortion. The first was a CNN headline on Tuesday, after a Palestinian terrorist killed two and wounded many more when he fired wildly at Jerusalem passersby. The CNN homepage headline describing the event was \"ISRAEL SHOOTING WOUNDS DOZENS\" - with the implication that it was an Israeli who was responsible for the attack.
Associated Press, too, was cited by HonestReporting.com for its headline that same day equating the above terrorist shooting (before it was known that two had been killed) and an Israeli discovery of a Shechem bomb factory and killing of four of the Hamas terrorist factory operators: \"ISRAEL KILLS 4, PALESTINIAN WOUNDS 8.\" The apparent message is that the attack on four terrorist bombers is parallel to the shooting of elderly women standing at a bus stop.
The day before, AP delivered another botched headline when reporting on Israel\'s takeover of the city of Tul Karem: \"ISRAEL TAKES OVER ENTIRE WEST BANK.\"
CNN can be emailed at Brad.Turell@turner.com, Walter.Isaacson@turner.com, and allfeedback@cnn.com, while AP can be reached at feedback@ap.org.
…And more from Honestreporting.com: In light of the Lebanese accusations that Israel was behind yesterday\'s car-bombing of controversial Phalangist leader Elais Hobeika, the organization quotes Hobeika\'s own bodyguard, Robert Maroun Hatem. In his book \"From Israel to Damascus,\" Hatem revealed that Hobeika was a Syrian double-agent, and that the Phalangists\' massacre of 900 Arabs in Sabra and Shatila was aimed at discrediting Israel and Ariel Sharon. Hatem wrote,
\"I can state under oath that General Sharon would never have lit up the area the way he did had he planned for any butchery... Reflecting back on the events of my life, all the facts led me to believe that Hobeika was the man, who in 1982, provoked the Sabra and Shatilla massacres.\"
