Israelis will be able to enjoy the Perseid meteor shower starting Sunday night, but residents of the coastal plain and northern Negev may have a hard time enjoying the spectacle due to cloudy conditions.

The Perseids are an annual phenomenon, in which coin-sized fragments from the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet burn up in Earth's atmosphere, leaving streaks of light across the sky.

The Perseid shower can be viewed for the next three nights, with the peak occurring on Monday. The moon will set at about 10:30 p.m., creating optimal viewing conditions. The meteors are expected to reach a rough rate of about 100 visible flashes per hour.

The largest event for watching Perseids will take place at Timna Park in the Negev desert, on Monday night. Information about the event is available in Hebrew on the Arava Tourism Facebook page
