A Sinai-based jihadist group claimed on Friday that it had fired rockets on Thursday towards the Israeli Red Sea resort city of Eilat.
The group, Jamaat Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis, claimed it fired two Grad missiles towards the city.
In a statement posted online, the group claimed that the missiles "frightened Allah's Jewish enemies" and made them run for shelter. Egyptian media reported that the group is a small one which operates both in the Sinai as well as in Gaza.
On Thursday evening, residents of Eilat reported hearing loud explosions in the city.
Security forces checked to determine whether the explosions were caused by Grad missiles that were fired at the city. After several hours of searching, police and the Home Front Command assessed the situation and gave the all clear for life in the city to return to normal.
Thus far, no debris of rockets has been found. It is believed that if rockets had indeed been fired toward Eilat they likely exploded in an open area.
In April, terrorists fired three rockets at Eilat. No casualties were reported.
A Salafi jihadist group later claimed responsibility for the attack.
