The head of Israel’s Mossad, Tamir Pardo, met secretly with the Turkish intelligence agency’s undersecretary, Hakan Fidan, on June 10 in Ankara, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The two officials discussed the ongoing protests in Turkey, which started two weeks ago to oppose a development project in Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park and spread to the other parts of the country.

According to the report, Pardo requested an appointment to meet with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan, however, has not yet responded to this request, Hurriey Daily News reported.

Fidan and Pardo shared information about the latest situation in Syria as well as the Iranian influence in the country. They also reportedly discussed intelligence sharing between the two countries.

Relations between Israel and Turkey have recently began to improve following Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s apology over the death of nine anti-Israel activists who illegally and unlawfully attempted to infiltrate the borders of the state of Israel in May 2010.

The ship, filled with vehement anti-Israel activists, sough to threaten Israel’s national security by breaching the Gaza blockade.
