A lone terrorist opened fire on passersby at a downtown Jerusalem intersection - Jaffa St. and Rabbi Kook St. - shortly before 4:30 PM this afternoon, wounding some 30 people. Policemen, deployed in greater-than-usual numbers in light of the many terrorist warnings, were able to overcome and shoot the terrorist to death while he was attempting to insert a second magazine into his rifle. Five citizens are reported to be in serious condition, including one in grave condition.

Both Fatah and Hamas have already taken credit for the attack, saying that this is the beginning of their retaliation for recent Israeli offensives - mostly the raid in Shechem (see next article). Israeli officials have repeatedly said that the terrorists require no excuses for their actions, and that intelligence warnings of terrorist attacks were received well before the killing of Tanzim leader Raid Karmi last week.
