A Hamas spokesman said Sunday that the Islamist group is eager to sign a reconciliation deal with rival faction Fatah.

“If the elections were held in a state of tension, it would lead to more division within the Palestinian factions,” Hamas spokesman Abu Zurhi told the Ma’an News Agency, claiming that conditions in Palestinian Authority-controlled areas are not ripe for elections, as he blamed the situation on Israeli defensive actions in the area.

Another senior Hamas official said Friday that the group is ready to implement the reconciliation deal “word for word.”

“We have made efforts to implement a national reconciliation deal that is steadfast and not based on political authority,” senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said according to the Ma’an News Agency.

Unity talks have come to a standstill since a series of meetings in Cairo in February failed to yield desired results.

The factions were set to meet again in Cairo on Feb. 27 but Hamas requested the meeting be postponed.
