The \"Jewish Billionaires Club,\" as it is affectionately known, convened this week in Jerusalem to celebrate the success of the program they sponsored, Discovery. Thousands of Jewish students from all over the world have visited Israel for the first time in their lives in the framework of this anti-assimilation project. It was initiated by Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, who, with the encouragement of Prime Ministers Netanyahu and Barak, gathered another 12 of their friends for the project, each of whom donated $5 million to the cause. The government, Jewish communities around the world, and the Jewish Agency also chipped in. Some 25,000 students have arrived in Israel during the past three years, and 6,000 are currently here - including 20 deaf-mutes on a special program; 18,000 more are expected during 2002 in the framework of what has been called the largest and most successful Jewish educational program in the world.
