Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said Saturday that the Obama administration’s handling of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi should be a “bigger scandal than (former President) Nixon” because “no one died" at Watergate.

“No one died at watergate! The Obama lies about Benghazi and Biden's deliberate lies Thursday night should be a bigger scandal than Nixon,” Gingrich wrote in a Twitter message Saturday, urging moderators to press Obama on the attack, which resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

“It is clear the Obama team decided to have the Vice President lie about an event that killed four Americans including an ambassador,” he continued. “Now had over a month of dishonesty and coverup from Obama team about Benghazi. Getting to truth should be number one goal next two debates.”

During the vice presidential debate on Thursday, Biden brushed off Republican criticism of the administration’s response to the Libyan attack, calling it “a bunch of malarkey.”

Biden said the Obama administration did not immediately identify the attack as an act of terrorism because they were told otherwise by U.S. intelligence officials.

“That was exactly what we were told by the intelligence community,” Biden said. “As they learned more facts about exactly what happened, they changed their assessment.”

During the date, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) continued to condemn the Libyan attacks as a sign of the “unraveling of the Obama foreign policy.

“This Benghazi issue would be a tragedy in and of itself, but unfortunately it's indicative of a broader problem,” he said.
