According to a Jewish Agency for Israel spokesman, preliminary figures indicate that over 44,400 new immigrants came to Israel in 2001: 33,763 from the former Soviet union, 3,294 from Ethiopia, 1,400 from Argentina, and 5,956 from other countries.
