Everyone agrees that abuse of children is a terrible phenomenon. Exacerbating the problem is that abusers are often people whom we and our children know and trust.
Family therapist, Leora Mandel, is both a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). She hosts the radio program, "The Jewish Home & Family' and this week spoke about child abuse and pedophilia. She stressed that this is a phenomena which is non-discriminatory and can be found in any segment of society.
Questions Mandel discusses on the show include;
--Who are the perpetrators of this crime?
--What are the negative effects that abused children suffer with--often long into adulthood? ------How can we protect our children from becoming victims?
--What are essential points that every parent needs to convey to their children on this topic in an age appropriate fashion?
--What are warning signs and red flags that abuse might have or be occuring?
--What does the recovery process look like?
Though it is a difficult topic to air, Leora Mandel discusses it honestly and with much sensitivly.
