Japan may add testing for radiation in mother's milk to the health checks in Fukushima Prefecture.
The province is home to three reactors that had partial meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear power plant following a massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, 2011.More than 15,000 people lost their lives in the disaster that sent radioactive particles rushing into the air, land and water surrounding the damaged plant in northeastern Japan.
A government spokesman who declined to give his name told CNN the prefecture is working out a plan to sample milk from new mothers in the area.Scientists last May and June found traces of radioactive cesium in 7 out of 21 samples of mother's milk in Fukushima, but insisted the amounts were minute, and posed no harm to the babies.
