A fire next to Chabad’s “770” headquarters in Crown Heights, New York early Tuesday apparently was accidental, but graffiti was discovered.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the apparent electrical fire in a Kingston Avenue Chabad building, next to a women's synagogue at the 770 Eastern Parkway headquarters, after being notified by a passerby that he saw smoke coming out of the basement entrance to a Chabad Kollel, where married yeshiva students learn.
Chabad reported that a box speaker caught fire in a bathroom that was being used as a storage closet.
However, investigators remained on the scene after the discovery of graffiti, which did not appear to be anti-Semitic.
An image had been spray painted and appeared to depict flames or possibly a cannabis plant. It was not known when it was painted.
