President Moshe Katzav made a \"gesture\" to the Israeli-Arab sector today by visiting the town of Sakhnin in the Galilee on the occasion of the end-of-Ramadan Id el-Fitr festival - including the graves of two Arabs who were killed in clashes with the police during the violent Arab riots of October 2000. Several locals demonstrated against him during the visit, and clashed violently with the police while blocking the road on which he was to arrive. The President said that he came to express sorrow and honor the memory of those who died, noting that the Arabs of Israel have a right to protest, but only in legitimate ways. In answer to a question, his spokesperson said that it\'s true that the two did not simply \"die,\" but \"the President feels that he wants to take a step towards dialogue and open communication with the Arab sector.\" Katzav did not visit the bereaved families of Emanuel, although he did visit the wounded in the hospital.
