British security personnel quickly evacuated the main terminal in Manchester Airport Wednesday morning after the bomb squad was called to examine a suspicious package.
Greater Manchester Police Superintendent Phil Davies told reporters authorities that Terminal 1 had been evacuated “as a standard precaution” at 8:30 a.m. BST (12:30 p.m. Israel time). The airport's other two terminals remained open.
The suspicious item was described as a bag, but specific details were not released to the media. Eleven flights that were set to depart at the time were allegedly delayed, but arrivals were not affected. The terminal reopened about two hours later.
A suspect was detained under the British Terrorism Act, and was being questioned by anti-terror police, according to a report by the BBC.
Earlier this month, a bomb threat forced a Manchester-bound PIA plane to divert to Turkey after the Pakistani airline received bomb threats by email at its office in Islamabad.
Some 20 million passengers travel through the airport each year, the fourth largest airport in Britain.
