PLO Jerusalem Affairs Chief Sari Nuseiba, legislator Jawad Buloos, and two others were detained by Jerusalem police this morning just before a diplomatic reception they planned to host at a hotel in Jerusalem’s Old City. Nuseiba had invited consular representatives from many countries for the PLO-sponsored reception marking the Moslem holiday Id al-Fitr. Public Security Minister Uzi Landau told Voice of Israel Radio this morning that the police have open orders to prevent any official PLO activity in the nation’s capital. Landau said that an official PLO reception in Jerusalem, like the activity in the now-closed Orient House, constitutes a grave violation of Israel’s sovereignty in its own capital. The order to forbid the reception was decided upon in a telephone poll among government ministers.
Later today, Labor party Sec.-Gen. Ra\'anan Cohen forbade Labor knesset members and Yossi Beilin from meeting with Nuseiba at the party’s headquarters in Tel Aviv. Some Labor party members were infuriated by Cohen’s decision.
