A new type of terror attack has hit the Israel Electric Company power plant on the Ashkelon coast, just days after a similar incident in Hadera.
Jellyfish swarmed into large pipes that carry sea water into the plant, blocking the filters. The blocked filters has caused the water to back up in the plant, company officials told reporters on Monday.
A jellyfish infestation is a common occurrence on the Israeli seashore in early summer, officials said.
They added, however, that over the past few years there seems to be an increase in the number of jellyfish swarming in. Eventually, they said, the jellyfish could cause major damage, and might even halt the production of electricity altogether.
Jellyfish have disabled power plants in a similar manner in several other countries. A cascading blackout was caused in the Philippines in 1999 as a result of the goopy creatures, and the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California was disabled by jellyfish last year.
