In a ceremony last night in the Har Nof synagogue of Shas party spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the Zaka unit launched the first five of its new scooters. The much-admired Zaka, run by the man known as the hareidi community\'s Operations Officer, Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, responds to terrorist attacks, car accidents and the like, ensuring burial for all human remains in complete accordance with Jewish law. Zaka also deals with non-Jewish victims of terror attacks, helping to accommodate other religious customs when necessary.

Meshi-Zahav explained last night that they were recently unable to rescue a girl in Jerusalem who was choking because of traffic jams, and she in fact died. It was decided that scooters would help avoid such tragedies in the future, enabling city volunteers to bypass traffic. Five volunteers have enrolled in courses over the past month to learn to drive the small motorized vehicles, which were donated by the Metro Company and are outfitted with boxes to hold emergency equipment. The first scooters will be deployed in Jerusalem, and there are plans to expand to all major cities in Israel.
