Peace between Israel and the PLO will be achieved with the aid of the United States, King Abdullah II of Jordan said Saturday. According to AFP, he made the remark as he urged American businessmen to invest in his country.
"Jordan's commitment to the future is secure. It has driven our long work for regional peace... and with America's help, peace will succeed," he said.
He did not provide any reasons for his optimism regarding diplomatic efforts to end the Arab-Israeli conflict.
"Our same belief in the future is driving our determination to open the doors of enterprise and opportunity," he said, adding that the region offered 350 million potential consumers.
"But we cannot do it alone. We need partners, to build prosperity that lasts -- in my country, and in my region."
Just one day earlier, protesters in Jordan mixed pro-reform protests with anti-Israel activism, calling both to fight corruption and adopt political change and to end the peace treaty with Israel. Thousands took part in protests in Amman and elsewhere, including one protest near the Israeli embassy.
At least two of the demonstrations in Amman were organized by the Islamic-led opposition, local unions, and the Muslim Brotherhood.
