The Justice Ministry has named Rabbi Shlomo Daichovsky, known for liberal views, as the head of the Rabbinical Courts, a position he has held in the past.

Rabbi Daichovsky, who has been deeply involved in work on pre-nuptial agreements, already serves as interim head of the Rabbinical Courts.

His nomination was accepted as a compromise candidate to succeed Rabbi Eliyahu Ben-Dahan. Rabbi Daichovsky resigned as head of the Rabbinical Courts two years ago because of his age.

His appointment comes shortly after the High Court rejected a petition that a woman be appointed as head of the courts. Justice Uzi Fogelman rejected the argument that a pending Knesset bill to appoint a woman to the position would not be blocked by the appointment of Rabbi Daichovsky.

The Justice Ministry said that it would honor such a law, which is unlikely to be approved by the Knesset.
