The Palestinian Authority says it broke up a Hamas cell planning to kill a PA official, kidnap Israelis living in Judea and Samaria and attack Jerusalem with suicide attacks.
IDF spokespersons told Israel National News that Israeli forces were not involved in the counterterrorist operation, which if true, would represent a significant achievement for PA security forces.
The Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency, closely associated with the PA, reported Wednesday that four Hamas terrorists were arrested and weapons and cash were confiscated at the terrorists’ headquarters in Shechem.
Israeli security and intelligence military personnel have been involved in most operations against Hamas terrorists operating in Judea and Samaria. It is not known if Israel provided the PA with intelligence information on the Hamas cell.
The terrorists were members of the Al-Qassam branch of Hamas and were in direct contact with the de facto Hamas government in Gaza, according to Ma'an, which also reported that PA forces found a booby-trapped vehicle that was to be used in a suicide attack in Jerusalem.
The cell was part of a Hamas network operating in Samaria, and the arrest may be connected to Israel’s counterterrorist action several weeks ago that nabbed the ”money man” who had smuggled large sums of money for Hamas operations.
The Israeli government revealed on Monday that the IDF and intelligence officials raided the man’s home in Tulkarm, located several miles east of Netanya, and confiscated nearly $1 million in cash and property.
