Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz has agreed to raise the speed limit on several highways from 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) to 110 kph (68 mph). The speed limit on some local roads will be reduced.

The speed limit will be 110 kph on Highway 1 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, on Highway 431 between Modiin and Rishon L'Tzion, and on Highway 4 between Rishon L'Tzion and Ashdod.

In addition, the speed limit will rise from 90 kph (55 mph) to 100 kph on Highway 2, Highway 5, Highway 20, and Highway 40. Transportation Ministry workers will consider raising the speed on Highway 40 to 110 kph at a later date.

On select large local roads, the speed limit will drop. The maximum speed will go from 80 to 70 kph on Derech Namir in Tel Aviv, from 60 to 50 on Sderot Ben-Gurion in Be'er Sheva, and from 50 to 30 on Rechov Bezel in Tel Aviv.

The new speed limits were determined following two years of study by a committee of experts on traffic patterns, finance, and traffic safety.
