The Knesset Presidium voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of a motion by Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, to appoint Yardena Meller-Horowitz as the next Knesset Secretary-General. She will replace Attorney Eyal Yinon who will become Knesset Legal Adviser in April.

Meller will be the seventh Knesset Secretary-General. She will be the first woman in that role, and Speaker Rivlin intends to announce her appointment on International Women''s Day, March 8. She has been working in the Knesset since 1977, in various capacities. For two decades she was the manager of the Likud faction, and for five years she served as Secretary of the State Control Committee.

Rivlin told the Presidium members Tuesday: “I know Yardena personally and trust her abilities and professional integrity. Yardena is part of the landscape of the Knesset, she is well versed in the intricacies of the Standing Orders and the procedures of the House. I trust that she will discharge her new position in the best possible way.”

The Secretary General of the Knesset oversees and manages the parliamentary functions of the Knesset. The Secretary General or one of his deputies is always present in the Knesset plenum when it is in session. At those times he advises the Speaker on matters pertaining to the Knesset's Standing Orders, procedure and custom, and assists him in managing the list of speakers.
