The Jewish community of China enjoyed fresh kosher milk for the first time this week as a dairy in Beijing became the first to welcome kosher supervision. The dairy is certified by members of the Chabad chassidic movement.
Previously, the only kosher milk available was long-life milk imported to the country.
China is home to an estimated 10,000 Jews. Three years ago, the Jewish community of Beijing opened that city's first kosher restaurant and began producing kosher meat products.
The extra supervision required in the production of kosher milk may attract non-Jewish customers as well. Dairy sales have been down in China following a scandal in which milk products were discovered to have been watered down and laced with dangerous chemicals.
