The IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi has ordered that the IDF's facilities for training in urban warfare be inspected for safety problems, after he received the conclusions of an inquiry into a tragic training accident. The accident occurred at the Zeora training facility in the Golan Heights on December 21, and involved the death of Corporal Mor Cohen.
Meanwhile, the Investigative Military Police are conducting their own investigation into the accident, the conclusions of which will be transferred to the Military Prosecution which will decide whether to press charges and against whom.
Ashkenazi instructed the commanders of the IDF's training facilities to implement lessons that were learned in the course of the inquiry, and to make certain that the protective measures in the facilities ensure the safety of the trainees.
The main points of the IDF inquiry team's report about the accident were presented to the Cohen family Thursday night by the Commander of the Golani Brigade's Regimental Training Base and the brigade's Casualties Officer.
Cpl. Cohen was killed by a bullet which was fired by a fellow soldier who was on the other side of a wall in the training facility. Unknown to either of them, the wall had a hole in it and the bullet went through the hole, killing Cohen.
