MK Aryeh Bibi (Kadima) proposed a law Monday morning that would grant amnesty to policemen who were convicted of offenses during the 2005 destruction of Gush Katif and the forced eviction of thousands of Jews from their homes ('The Disengagement').

The bill is being proposed after the Knesset passed a law granting a pardon to 'Disengagement' protesters.

The  Organization for Human Rights in Judea and Samaria, which initiated the pardon for Diengagement protesters, said it opposed the bill to give police a similar pardon. “The law for pardoning opponents of the Disengagement does not grant amnesty to rioters who were accused of grave violence,” it stated.

The policy of the Department for Investigations of Police was to file charges against police “only in the cases in which it was deserved and with the right balances.” OHRJS added that as a result of this policy, and despite the serious violence employed by police against the Gush Katif evictees,  only four criminal charge sheets against policemen were filed during the Disengagement.
