According to Arab affairs expert Eyal Zisser, the tension between Israel and Syria in recent days is likely to fade soon. Neither country wants a war at this time, he said.
The current tension, he said, is probably the result of an “unclear” statement by Defense Minister Ehud Barak which was misunderstood on the Syrian side. Barak stated that there are only two options with Syria – a peace agreement or war.
Zisser noted that for the past 36 years, the border with Syria has been very peaceful, due to deterrence and not because of any peace agreement.
