U.S. President Barack Obama casually referred to Israel's president by his first name in a breezy videotaped welcome played Tuesday night at the opening of the 2009 annual 'Facing Tomorrow' conference.
More than 1,500 are attending the gathering at Binyanei HaUma in Jerusalem, initiated last year by President Shimon Peres and co-sponsored by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
"Shimon has contributed to a deep and much abiding friendship between the U.S. and Israel," said Obama, "a bond that is much more than a strategic alliance."
Obama said in his message that Americans and Israelis share a belief that "democracies can shape their own destinies, and that opportunities should be available to all." Israel has given life to that promise, he said, in its thriving democracy. "We see it in the courage of citizens who go about their lives even when faced with great danger."
Finally, Obama noted the challenge presented by "obstacles that stand in the way of a secure and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians," warning that it was time to deal with the issue "head-on" rather than "defer action to sustain a dangerous status quo."
The American president also mentioned the global economic crisis, the growing danger from climate change. But the very next line of his address adroitly tied together the issues of "the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction" -- he delicately avoided mentioning Iran, Syria or North Korea -- and Israel-PA talks.
"As we look to the future, consider [what] we can achieve if we move beyond our differences, if a secure Israel and independent Palestine are at peace. Arab states commit to genuine reconciliation. If new partnerships will be forged across the region... If we overcome the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction and if global cooperation was [sic] founded upon the basis of mutual interests and mutual respect..." he said.
"History shows us what is possible. Impossible odds can be overcome," Obama added. "Shimon's leadership reminds us the dark moments cannot conceal a path to progress."
Israel National News is broadcasting live from the event until its conclusion Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m.
