Kadima party chairwoman and former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met Tuesday in Jerusalem with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana to discuss the growing threat of Iranian nuclear power and the endorsement of the Goldstone Report on Friday by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Opposition leader Livni told Solana that the current international sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic have not been enough to curb Iran's appetite for nuclear proficiency, and she warned that diplomatic negotiations on the matter should not be allowed to drag on.

The fact that the West has not allowed Iran to acquire nuclear weapons is not sufficient, and there should be no discussions on allowing Iran to have any nuclear program at, Livni stated.

Livni also told Solana that the EU should not back the Goldstone Report, which she described as a document that made terrorists look like a defensive force. "Europe knows what it means for a country to have to defend its citizens," she said, "and we expect it to reject the comparison between a legitimate army protecting its citizens from terror and terrorists."

The current president of the EU is Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, who came out in favor of the Goldstone Report earlier in the month. Bildt said at the time that Israel had made a "mistake" by not cooperating with Goldstone's fact-finding probe, which he called "independent" and "serious." The presidency of the European Union rotates every six months.
