During the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Jews traditionally perform the ritual of Kaparot, in which a chicken or money is used to symbolically atone for sins. At Kollel Chabad in Jerusalem, volunteers ensure that Kaparot are done with respect and care – both for the recipients of the aid, and for the chickens used in the ritual.

Jewish tradition teaches that a chicken is used in Kaparot to demonstrate the unpredictability of life. Just as the chicken is killed, so too the one performing the Kaparot ritual could lose his or her life if not for G-d's mercy.
