IDF troops exchanged shots with an Egyptian police officer on Israel's southern border early Monday morning. According to initial reports, IDF reservists spotted what appeared to be an armed individual operating about 20 kilometers from Eilat and in a border area that has no security fence.

The reservists reportedly shouted at the suspect to halt and then fired warning shots into the air. The suspect, meanwhile, fired directly at the soldiers, who returned the fire and identified a hit.

The hit turned out to be an Egyptian police officer, who sustained a serious shoulder wound, according to security sources. No IDF soldiers were injured.

Both the IDF and Egyptian security forces are working together on the investigation into the incident
