MK Avi Dichter, the former head of the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) who served as Minister of Public Security in Ehud Olmert’s government, said Wednesday that the Fatah convention was one of Israel’s greatest disappointments from this organization.
The Kadima MK added that Fatah leader and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas also experienced one of his greatest disappointments from the results of the convention.
Dichter said that Marwan Barghouti is a man who earned his status in PA society with the blood of Israelis who were murdered or injured. He added, “I hope that there will not be a government in Israel that is tempted to release the man upon a whim, in the hope that he is the one who will lead a true move towards peace.”
“This man has proved his unreliability, going from terror to peace and back to terror,” Dichter explained. “I think that the Palestinian society has to grow from within it people who understand true peace.”
Dichter said that he is in charge of a team in Kadima that is evaluating the Arab peace initiative. “The matter is being discussed in Kadima with the aim of shaping the line and direction of the party and to be better prepared for the day in which we return to power,” he said. “The Arab peace initiative could be an effective one,” he added, but it is “just an initiative – not a plan and certainly not an agreement.”
