Five new Torah scrolls were joyously donated to the IDF this week, courtesy of several Canadian synagogues and individual benefactors. A delegation of Canadian Jews currently in Israel on a One Israel Fund/Aish Hatorah Solidarity Mission joined with Etzion Brigade officers and soldiers and Alon Shvut residents in Gush Etzion on Monday for a gala \"Hachnasat Sefer Torah\" ceremony. Among those participating were IDF Chief Rabbi Brig.-Gen. Yisrael Weiss, and David and Shoshana Yehuda of Tzfat; the Etzion Brigade’s central synagogue, Heichal Noam, is dedicated to their son Noam\'s memory. Noam fell in battle in the 1982 Operation Peace for Galilee. The delegation includes members of the contributing Toronto congregations - Mercaz Ha\'Ivri, Shaarei Shamayim, and Agudath Israel.
The five Torah Scrolls, to be placed in IDF unit synagogues in Judea and Samaria, join several previous scrolls received in the framework of the official IDF “Operation Sifrei Torah” spearheaded in the U.S. by the National Council of Young Israel. Congregations or individuals wishing to contribute additional needed Torah Scrolls to the Israel Defense Forces can call the NCYI in New York at 212-929-1525, ext.115.
