The Transportation Ministry has agreed to help “greenify” Israeli industry’s image, removing the smoke from chimneys in “industrial zone” signs.
Yudka Segev, Director of the Manufacturers Assocation, asked for the change. He explained that smoking chimneys, as appear on the official road sign indicating an industrial zone in the area, no longer adequately represent modern Israeli industry. This, he said, is because of technological advances and the adaptation of factories to stricter environmental guidelines.
A new sign with a smokeless chimney will now be used, as is the case in the European Union.
Segev wrote in his request that the Manufacturers Association, representing industry of many types, “works in cooperation with its various members to safeguard clean air via legislation, regulations, and other means.” He said that many resources are invested to this end, at a cost of $750 million over the past three years.
Segev said that this effort has resulted in a drop of 95% in pollutants emitted into the air.
