Soldiers shot a Palestinian Authority Arab man on Monday at the Tarkumia checkpoint near Hevron. The man was lightly wounded.
Soldiers guarding the checkpoint said the man had arrived shortly after 4 p.m. and had failed to heed soldiers' warning calls to stop. Fearing the man to be a suicide bomber, the soldiers fired warning shots in the air, then fired at his lower body, scoring a hit and forcing him to stop.
An IDF bomb squad was called to the scene. No bomb was found on the suspect's body, and he was released to a hospital.
An officer in the region said the incident will be investigated. Initial evidence indicates that the soldiers acted properly, he said.
Judea and Samaria are currently under closure due to concern that terrorists will attempt to attack crowded areas on Memorial Day (Yom Hazikaron) and Independence Day (Yom Haatzmaut). Due to the closure, PA Arabs will be allowed to enter pre-1967 Israel only in cases of humanitarian need.
