The 'Omer' or 'Sefirat HaOmer' is a 7-week partial mourning period after Passover during which religious Jews restrict their music listening to slow, pensive or acapella music (without instruments). The Omer period commemorates the sudden death of Rabbi Akiva's students which occurred at this time of the year.
