The 29-hour manhunt for a terrorist/car thief ended successfully this morning, when he was caught near the tennis courts of Ramat HaSharon. A police force identified him from afar, and an elite-unit sniper shot him in the leg. The wounded fugitive was transferred to Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikvah under tight security.
The 26-year-old Gaza resident had been wanted for over four years for terrorist crimes - the details of which were not permitted for publication today - but also for stealing dozens of Israeli cars during this period. The police also arrested this morning an Arab resident of Lod whose job it was to transport the thief and his accomplices into the autonomous areas.
Arutz-7\'s Kobi Finkler reports that at least 34 Palestinian car thieves have been trained for terrorist activity by Palestinian elements. He said that police are not releasing most of the information, but that he was able to learn of two incidents: In the Tel Aviv suburb of Yahud this past July, terrorists dispatched two thieves who placed a bomb in a car trunk in a private parking lot. The experienced thieves left no traces of the forced entry. The ensuing explosion caused no serious injuries. In another case, a thief named Mahmoud Abu Yusuf was hired to steal a car that was later used for a car bomb; in exchange for his services, he received a work pass in a Hamas factory.
