Iranian state security agents this week arrested a number of nuclear scientists they said were suspected of spying for foreign governments, according to the official Tabnak Iranian news agency.
However, the authorities did not say which government they believed the workers were spying for, nor did they reveal which projects or sites the suspects were connected with. Nor is it known what positions they held.
Iranian Revolutionary Guards head, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, claimed the suspects were collecting information on his elite military unit as well as individual military and security officials and the country's nuclear program.
The Islamic Republic recently also arrested local blogger Hussein Derakhshan on similar charges, when he returned from a visit to Canada.
Derakhshan, who holds dual Iranian-Canadian citizenship, visited the Jewish State in 2007. According to the Iranian Jahan News agency, the blogger allegedly confessed under interrogation to spying for Israel.
Last month, Iranian businessman Ali Ashtari was hanged after being convicted in June on charges of spying for Israel. Ashtari was a supplier of electronic devices for military, security and defense facilities in Iran.
The government announced prior to the execution that it had dismantled an international spy ring run by Israel's Mossad intelligence agency.
